For the second time, I have seen a chameleon in my garden. The last time was last year or so ago, on the garage roof. This time it was cooler because I had this epic face-off like in Western movies with the chameleon and then sneakily dived in and picked it up.

Wiggle wiggle, went its little legs with crazy ass sidewinder-claw feet.

With the help of my Dad, we put it into a bucket and carried it indoors, and called the RSPCA. Whilst we were waiting some automatic announcement asked us if we had hedgehogs in the garden and we were both like "This is way cooler than hedgehogs!".

So it turns out this chameleon is pretty big and worth several hundred pounds, and some guy is going to come pick it up in an hour or so. It's currently in the bucket in the sitting room, keeping warm. Oh the suspense!

CONTINUED:

So the RSPCA man arrived and said that the chameleon was very pretty but also very, very underweight (like, half the weight it should have been), and put it into a box and is now going round knocking on doors to see if he can find the owner.

He said that it was a miracle that we found it, because chameleons die very quickly in the wild in Britain.

Also this breed has very sharp teeth which can scar you if it bites you. Which would have been nice to know before I plucked it up from the garden. But anyway, I'm glad that it's going to be okay (possibly - it might die of malnutrition but it's going to some guy who looks after reptiles near here so there's a big change it won't).

CONCLUDED:

The RSPCA man came back; he's found the owner who's a lady who lives a few roads from us and has, like, 20 chameleons. He said that he had a look around and they've all been looked after fine so it's not a case of neglect or anything. However:

Remember how I said just up there that chameleons die very quickly in the wild? It turns out that this chameleon is the same one we saw back in June 2008, and it's been in the wild since then. The lady who owns them confirmed this; that was about when she lost the chameleon. Which is freaking insane. No wonder it's so thin.

This is so cool that it's probably going to get into the papers!

Also, the chameleon is a girl :3
